Multifocal lenses, or so-called multifocal or progressive lenses, are used for the onset of presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness). Multifocal lenses are intended to replace reading glasses and distance glasses, or even varifocals or bifocals. In young people, the elastic lens of the eye can change its shape and thus its optical refractive power ( accommodation ) through muscle tension, which makes sharp vision possible at all distances. With increasing age, the elasticity of the eye lens decreases, so that accommodation becomes more and more difficult and everything that is near can no longer be seen sharply. One then needs an additional power for near vision, which is called addition. Multifocal lenses correct both a basic defective vision and the additional presbyopia.
