With the simultaneous functional principle, the distance effect is in the center and the near effect in the adjacent periphery of the contact lens or vice versa.
The simultaneous positioning of the distance and near zones in the pupil area always results in a simultaneous image of the distance and near zones. The currently undesired image (far or near) is ideally suppressed by the brain and not perceived.
A very small pupil opening or a decentered lens fit can impair visual performance.
