Hydrogen peroxides are used in many different ways today. One major area is contact lens care, but it is also used for bleaching, teeth whitening, mouthwash and water purification. Hydrogen peroxide is not an artificially created compound that can only be obtained through chemical reactions under laboratory conditions; it actually occurs very frequently in nature. According to its formula H2O2, it consists of water and atomic oxygen. Simply shaking a bottle of water leads to the formation of a certain amount of hydrogen peroxide.

The water is saturated with oxygen - hydrogen peroxide is formed. The purity of the water increases and the taste is improved. It is also contained in fresh fruit and vegetables. Freshly squeezed fruit juices are rich in oxygen and have the ability to cleanse the body and supply it with vital energy. The antimicrobial effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide has been known for centuries. The optimum concentration for contact lens disinfection is 3%. Many contact lens practitioners consider peroxides to be the "gold standard" in disinfection due to their broad antimicrobial spectrum. They are highly effective against bacteria, fungi (including mould and yeast) and Acanthamoeba.

Contact lens practitioners recommend hydrogen peroxides for sensitive and allergic eyes, for customers who had problems with their previous care product or generally have comfort problems when wearing contact lenses and because no further preservatives are contained after neutralization.

How peroxide systems such as Premium Care Peroxide and My Solution Peroxide work

The hydrogen peroxide molecule breaks down into water and a single oxygen atom - a free radical. Free radicals are very reactive and react with any organic molecule in their vicinity. This process is called oxidation. Oxygen free radicals are formed which quickly bind to microorganisms and destroy them. Oxidation occurs every time an oxygen molecule collides with an oxidizable substance such as bacteria, fungi, Acanthamoeba. During oxidation, the cell membrane of the microorganism is destroyed and the cell leaks and dies. The time required to eliminate the various microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, Acanthamoeba) varies.

The storage recommendation today is overnight with a neutralization phase of 6 hours.

A non-neutralized peroxide solution is toxic and can cause eye injuries. The hydrogen peroxide must be completely neutralized and decompose into water and oxygen before the contact lens is put back on the eye. The peroxide systems available on the market today can be divided into 2 types of neutralization OneStep with platinum catalyst and TwoStep with biological catalase.
